I ran the Hartford Marathon because the longest run I did in the past five months was a fourteen miler last Sunday.  And that is not going to be enough for the New York Marathon preparation.  I just have been lazy when it comes to running long.  So I figured I would simply run Hartford and finally get a long run done.  My plan was to run 8:55/mile pace.  But I apparently went out too fast and was at 8:38/mile AP at the 13.1 mile mark.  I tried going slower up front, but just could not find the 8:55s.

My Garmin watch reports 26.4 miles in 3:59:43 @ 9:05/mile AP

Per unofficial results for Hartford Marathon

13.1 miles @ 8:38/mile AP

20 miles @ 8:49/mile AP

26.2 miles @ 9:11/mile AP and completed the Marathon in 3:59:38 which is 5:18 off my best time of 3:54:20.

Placed 898 out of 2,630 overall.

Placed 636 out of 1507 for males.

Placed 57 out of 145 in Age division.

Not a bad result given the lacking Long runs.

I do very well for the first sixteen miles. From there I get noticeably slower.

The fact of the matter is with the Marathon distance – as can be seen by the above, is all about how you manage the last 6.2 miles.

Anyway, I am fine with this result.  Not too far off from my best Marathon time.

Hello Pat! Not a too shabby considering your mileage, I am pleased for you. You had a great day for it too. Your placement in the finishing order is pretty good, well in the top half, a good place to be. Talk to you soon!

Marc,

Thanks! Top 34% of the field overall - so not bad given my terrible mileage. But it's not even about the mileage I think. I believe running twice a week (intervals and tempo) and doing a long run every weekend would actually suffice for the marathon training regimen. I should test the theory and actually do the long runs though! I've got to get good at HOLDING THE PACE beyond mile 16!

PRE, nice race today. I remember that course well, not one of my better days. Glad yours went so much better. Good luck at NYC!

Nice job PRE. To come that close to your PR off lower mileage is really good. This should give you a nice boost going into NYC.
