I ran the Run for the Penguins 5K today in Mystic, CT with Michael and Christian. Genie and Brandon did the two mile walk. Brandon opted to not run the 5K.

A couple weeks ago, Christian told me he wanted to break 27 minutes for the distance.  I told him I would pace him.  No matter what he runs, slower or faster than me, I’ll simply run 8:35/mile pace.  And when he sees me, he’ll know for sure he is on pace.

WELL, TURNS OUT, HE DID NOT NEED ME PACING HIM.  HE WAS IN FRONT OF ME THE ENTIRE RACE!

Not only did he break 27 minutes, he broke 26 minutes and 25 minutes by finishing the race in 24:50 @ 8:01/mile Average Pace (8:41/mile would have broken 27:00).  This is a huge Personal Record for him.  He took a minute off his time per mile from last year when he ran this race.  He had been running in the weeks preceding the race in preparation.

Michael finishes in 29:31 @ 9:31/mile AP.  There was a trail portion of the race a half mile in and he twisted his ankle but continued running on.  I met up with Michael at the one mile mark and he was walking.  I did not know at the time he twisted his ankle and figured he was just recovering from having gone out too fast.  He stuck with me for a while running alongside me.  Congrats to Michael as he finishes the race despite the injury.

My mile splits were 8:36, 8:27, 8:19 (and 7:56 for the last 0.12 miles). I finished the 5K in 26:18 @ 8:29/mile AP.  At the 2 mile mark I am at 8:31/mile AP and it does not matter if I go a little faster than 8:35/mile at this point going into mile 3.  Christian is well ahead of me and Michael is a distance behind me, so keeping it close to 8:35/mile will suffice.

Beginning the race, Michael and Christian were well ahead of me.  I figured they both might run out of gas at the 1.5 or two mile mark and I would catch them by maintaining the 8:35/mile pace.  Christian after the race told me he hit the 1 mile mark at 7:15 mile and the 2 mile mark at 16:00.  Thus his splits were 7:15, 8:45, 8:00, (and 8:00/mile pace for the final 0.1).  He went out very fast, slowed and picked it up for the rest of the race.

My best time for the 5K distance is 23:30.  Christian today was 24:50.  I don’t have much more time here.  I am thinking it will not take long for Christian to take 80 seconds off his 5K time and be a better 5K runner than myself.  This is all GOOD!  It means basically we will be helping each other to improve (he will train to beat me and I will train to have him not beat me!!)

Of course, if we both train for the distance and he beats me – I would be absolutely fine with that!  It’s a win-win there.

Great job Christian!!
