Hey thanks Burt. When you wrote, I thought you were part of the internet management blog team. I did not realize you were a runner.
Hello Predog.
I'll check your pages out soon Burt and Predog.

Haha! Sorry about that.
If you want to check out a real runner's blog, go to PreDog's blog. If you just want to see a goof ball, you can check out mine.

Hi Burt,
Checked out your blog and Predog's blog. Burt, your 1600s and 5Ks are better than my times. Your longer runs are about the same as mine from a time perspective. I will soon enter my race results to my blog. And then if you like you can check them out. Is this the proper way to speak to people? By entering the message into my blog? Or should I go to your page and enter the blog?
From Burt on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 12:39:54 from 68.225.214.248
Ah yes. I'm pretty speedy on shorter distances, but with my weight, I tend to burn out over the longer distances. I also need to run more base mileage.
As for speaking to people on the blog, you can type a comment in your blog or type one in somebody else's. What you don't want to do is if someone asks you a question on your blog, don't go answer it on their blog. Keep the conversation in one place. Looks like you're getting the hang of it.

I ran the Chicago Marathon. Average Heart Rate was 154 bpm which is 89% maximum heart rate. Marathon Pace Heart rate range is 79-88%. Thus I ran the race at above MP heart rate range. Excellent. This indicates I truly applied myself to running this Race.
Done at a 9:20 pace per mile. Pretty decent time given my Marathon PR is 4:03:42 for 9:18 pace per mile. 65 seconds off from my PR!!! And I doubt I ran my PR marathon at 154bpm. Heat may have factored into the elevated HR and diminished pace...but there was plenty of gatorade and water on the course. And I still had Gatorade in the Camel Bak at the race conclusion. I ran and conditions went from code green to yellow and conditions were at Red at the time of my finishing the Marathon. The winner of the race at the time of his winning saw the temp at 76 degrees I believe. I think I was running with temp in the 80s but am not sure.
So I am satisfied with this race result. But it would have been great if I actually PRd! Of course I ran more than the 26.2. My Garmin reported completing 26.2 but I still had about a third of a mile to go...Gamin reports my finishing the race in 4:00:44. It is not that the Garmin is inaccurate...it is simply I do not take the most direct route from start to finish (weaving, not cutting the corners as efficiently, water stops, etc). So next time I run a race, I will simply set the Garmin for a mile longer than the race distance so that I can get an accurate read on the finishing time by starting the watch at the start line and stopping the watch at the finish line.
If anyone out there ran Chicago, let me know what you thought of the race.

I still have to read the Chicago Tribune to see what is reported there from a heat perspective. I have yet to look at my Garmin mile splits. I saw the Marathon splits. I will analyze the data, and then figure out what my next race will be. This is actually the first time, since I cannot recall, where I did not have a race planned!!! I usually have been signed up for several races at a time...My focus had been Chicago and the tune-up races preceding Chicago.

From auntieem on Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 16:57:46 from 98.247.176.184
I think your performance in the heat is amazing! My training group had 12 people in Chicago, and they ALL performed 20-30 minutes slower than they predicted because of the heat. One person told me that as she passed through Chinatown (around 21), she saw 91 degrees posted somewhere. Congratulations!

Hi Allie.
Just testing if I could write a document without actually recording miles.
I can.
Which is good.
Because at times, I will be writing notes to myself here.
For example, soon to add notes related to pace ranges distances.
Am attempting to keep info in one area.
If you know by any chance if I can copy and paste text into documents, let me know. I saw temperature readings on your site.
Currently, I only know how to paste URLs and not text.
From allie on Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 21:27:17 from 174.23.232.22
yes, you most definitely can copy and paste text -- in or out of your blog posts. if you really want to go above and beyond in the visual entertainment department, see RivertonPaul's blog. he is a good tutor when it comes to adding pictures, video, etc.
From PRE on Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 22:34:57 from 99.50.214.225
Thanks Allie.
I just tested it out. It works now. Before when I tried, it did not work at all. So not sure what was happening before...but able to copy and paste now.
I did check out Riverton Paul's blog. You are right. He has a lot going on there. The first thing I noticed was a video of him running. He remarked in his most recent blog doing a lot of training on the treadmill. And in fact, he did very well at a recent marathon.
So maybe a treadmill might be something for me to consider. It gets cold in the winter...and I love the idea of getting a run in when the weather is freezing, ice on the ground and very dark...running in a warm home versus out in the snow!
From allie on Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 22:40:33 from 174.23.232.22
there are definitely advantages to having access to a treadmill in the winter months.
and yes, paul just ran a great marathon time. he runs lots of treadmill miles and does quite a bit of cross training on the elliptical. it seems to work really well for him.

hi PRE. i think you have some great goals set up.
regarding your question on progression runs - i think it's a great idea. that is actually one of my favorite types of runs to do, especially at the end of a long run. it teaches your body to run fast when it is tired and use fuel more efficiently in the later stages of a race. so, your proposed splits were: 8:30, 8:30, 9:00, 8:50, 8:40, 8:30, 8:20, 8:10, 8:00, 7:50, 8:30, 8:30
i think the actual progression part looks good, but i would run the beginning miles a bit differently. keep in mind that everyone is different, so if you think those paces will work for you, by all means do it that way. but personally i think it would be harder to switch gears to faster paces after starting out at 8:30 and then slowing to 9:00. i would consider starting at 9:00 and maybe doing two or three at that pace. then you can gradually decrease the pace with each mile. don't worry so much about hitting the exact splits -- just focus on effort. gradually increase the effort with each mile, just don't increase the speed too rapidly. it looks like in your final mile of the progression run you will be running at your 5k race pace, which is a solid way to end the workout, especially after a good amount of miles at an honest effort. this will definitely train your body to fight off fatigue at the end of a race (of any distance).
it looks like your final two miles are slower for a cooldown, which is smart, but i would not even worry about the pace for those final two. give it your best effort in the progression run, and then you can jog the cooldown - run at a pace that feels good and helps bring the HR back down.

Registered for MRR. Finally hav ea race scheduled (for Thanksgiving Day on 11/25/10). $20 + $1 = $21
Mile 2 of MRR all uphill I think I recall from last year.
From allie on Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 17:33:55 from 174.23.232.22
so what race did you register for? 5k? marathon? somewhere in between?
From PRE on Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 23:17:37 from 99.50.214.225
I would have loved to register for another Marathon. I soon will be registering for the Cox Sports Marathon to be run on 5/1/11.
But the race I registered for is the Manchester Road Race (Manchester, CT). It is a very well known race held every Thanksgiving Day. It is 4.75 miles. From what I recall about the race (ran it once - last year), mile two is all uphill! Or maybe I imagined that. But to confirm...guess I could refer to my journal (Garmin data as well).
Also considering doing a 5K or two during Dec.
Also the Colchester Half Marathon February 2011 will need to be done. I can not let that one go. I think that one is referred to as a "Beast of a Course" due to the extensive number of hills and elevation. It was my first race 2/09.
I looked at the Marathons you were considering actually...but they are too far for me. I would have loved Virginia! The one referred to as the Friendliest Marathon. That was probably the closest to me...but still, eight hours away (I live in CT).
My hope is to win the lottery for the New York Marathon and if so I will run that in 2011. It will be the second time I am entering the lottery. But the thing with New York...If I were to qualify for Boston, the Boston Marathon would be filled by that point. I heard what happened to you. Sorry to hear that. One day and the race was filled!
Well...wow...you asked me about which race I registered for and here I go on and on.
But for some reason, I need to have a race or several scheduled! I believe I will not slack totally with running if no race is scheduled. But if nothing is scheduled, I might not run as much as I could. Kind of a way of holding myself accountable. You seem very dedicated. I would like to be also. But I still have difficulty getting out there at times (too early, too cold, too late, tired, etc).
Generally, a work in progress. I will get there. This is one of the positive aspects of running for me as well...working it out. Getting there versus being there. For example, I just had the most amazing 18 week training program. Remained dedicated and completed most of the miles...much better than the previous 18 week training program.
From allie on Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 23:42:44 from 174.23.232.22
i think your race plans look great. and i agree, it's always nice to have something on the schedule to stay motivated and go after a goal.
my motivation/dedication comes and goes -- it usually coincides with the weather. i don't like running in cold weather at all, so i tend to start slacking off a bit in a winter. this year i hope to stay strong though. even if i can't get as many miles in, i at least want to keep a good base so that i can get back in shape faster in the spring.
i agree with you that there are many positive aspects to running -- much more than just getting an endorphin fix from exercise and staying healthy. it teaches you to be disciplined, make plans, set goals and work toward achieving something you never thought you could do. when i first got into running i did it only for the purpose of getting exercise, but i quickly realized there is much more to it than that. i have made so many new friends and been able to connect with some wonderful and inspiring people because of running. i have also learned some great lessons about life through the process of training and racing -- successes and failures and everything in between.
this site is very helpful too, as it brings together people from all over who are sharing common goals and experiences and can relate so much to the positive and negative experiences that we go through while training and racing. i am glad you found the site and i am excited to follow your training over the next year and see how all of your races play out. i am not sure there is anyone on this site who hasn't gotten faster over time with consistent blogging (consistent blogging = consistent training = faster). it really helps to have a virtual "team" cheering you on and encouraging you to keep going. best of luck to you, PRE!

Hi Auntieem,
Believe it or not, I have run only twice since Chicago. I ran a one miler. Yesterday I ran a six miler. I have never taken this much time off. I needed to get at least one race in place. I am getting ready to schedule six months of training miles to the calendar. All the schedules I have seen have the numbers of miles changing for various days. I think I would prefer something like tues 8, wed 6, thurs 10, sat 6, sun 15-20. Nice and consistent and I never have to think about how many miles to run for a particular day. I don't mind thinking about the type of run (MP, long, lactate thresh, etc...but when the number of miles always change for particular days...then gets confusing. I am glad to hear from you. I think about you often. I will be checking out your blog to see what races you have planned and how you are doing. But God help you when I start blogging you...I tend to write and write I am noticing.

10/23/10 at 1209pm. RUN 299B128. Planned six MP miles. HMP is 8:10 pace and MP is 8:37. Did six miles at 8:22 pace avg. Time is 50:15. Weather cool. Done at 152 bpm (87%). MP is 79-88%. So I ran faster than MP marker yet stayed within Marathon Pace heart rate range. MP at high end of 88% is 153 bpm.
Goal had been to do 8 miler at Long Run pace. LR pace is 9:07-10:07. First six miles at LR pace of 9:07. Last two littler quicker. done at 145bpm avg (83%) LR HR range is 74-84%. Stayed in range.
Met goal. Good Run. Consistent splits. Took it easy today.
MY 300th RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Getting back on track now. Have my nine week schedule of mileage to put in for 10/25 through 12/26/10. Also have 18 week schedule for 12/27/10 through 5/1/11...with May 1, 2011 being the Providence Marathon.
Within the above 27 weeks, will have races throughout.

Scheduled for today: 8 (4 LT). Did 4.73 LT, 41:50, 151 bpm (87% HRM). Avg pace is 8:50. Hot today during run. Week total 12.73. No run scheduled for tomorrow. Do a 5K tomorrow and then the 8 miler scheduled for today can be considered completed. Not 8 in a row...but given the difficult workout today, and the additional three being done tomorrow, this is okay. The scheduled work for today will not have been lessened.

From Running Blog Site:
So you decided it is time to qualify for the Boston
Marathon. What is it that you need to work on, speed or endurance? Use the
calculator on the left to find out. If your required minimum 5 K time is faster
than what you can do now, you need more speed. Otherwise, you need more
endurace. Feel free to experiment with different training mileage.
Once you got used to running 10 miles 6 times a week, add a
long run once a week. Start with 12 miles, and keep increasing its length until
it becomes 20. Again, remember the principle of gradual adaptation. Do not
increase the length faster than you can handle it. Pay particular attention to
your body signals at this point to avoid injury.
Once you can go 20 miles with a reasonable degree of
comfort, it is time to check your speed. Can you run your Boston
qualifying pace for a 5 K? How about 10 K? How about a half-marathon? Can you
go further at that pace? Race often to find out. I expect that most runners
will at least be able to run a half-marathon at the Boston qualifier pace once
they are running 10 miles a day 5 days a week with one long run on the sixth.
Now the challenge is to extend that pace to the marathon.

8:49/134, 8:49/141, 8:46/143, 8:17/148 (.25 mi).
Had 4r scheduled and did 4.25 at L/ML pace vs R pace. Did not need to do recovery run as did not do the nine miler Thursday...so I ran at a L/ML run pace. I aimed for 9:07s and did steady 8:45s for the most part. Knew I was about 125+ feet per mile ahead for most part. Was not sure what this would produce in way of pace. Was totally easy run...not meant to be one of great effort. Weather cool. And this reflected in HR range and pace as well. Only 141bpm. Of note, Genie mentioned she was going to the football game and expressed concern that I might fall. I mentioned that I never fall to the point where I get seriously injured. But...I did take another tumble, watching traffic at the intersection and tripped over the curb with my left foot as I was looking at the traffic in back of me to the right. Pitched onto my left shoulder. Ah, the dangers of running.
Week summary: did not do the 9 miler scheduled for Thursday. Did all other scheduled runs this week at the appropriate distances and HR ranges per schedule. Sunday an 8 miler was done. Long runs are done on Sunday. The week schedule begins on Monday and that is why an 8 miler was done Sunday versus a long run.

by the way, i did see your comment on my race report from oct. 9th. thanks for your insights. i usually do not rely on my garmin for race distances, as i know that they aren't always accurate. in fact, i don't even wear my garmin in most races; just a simple stopwatch. i measured this course using the course tool here on the blog (can be accessed from your "workout calendar" page -- sidebar on the left). it came out to 3.11 miles exactly, so i know the course was accurate. they actually figured out what was wrong with my time and made the adjustment on the posted results, so all is well!
From PRE on Sat, Oct 30, 2010 at 19:55:13 from 99.50.214.225
Allie,
Hello. I am always amazed that you are able to read my blogs when they refer to your entries from the distant past. I do have email notifications selected on my blog page such that when someone blogs me I am to be notified...but I never am notified.
Learning a little more about this site as time goes on and I love it.
Funny you mentioned they adjusted your time regarding your race. During my very first race on 2/28/09, there was a discrepancy with regard to what my Garmin reported and what the chip time reported. I wrote the race director about that and he followed up on it with the timing company. End result, 10:20 per mile pace stayed and 10:12 pace per armin report considered inaccurate. So there was a difference of (13.11 x 8 seconds)00:01:44 between the two times.
But what do you think in general about my comment? Not in your case, but when my Garmin is inaccurate, I always now just accept that for me, it is likely I am not running the tangents well. Do you think that is likely what is happening?
Thanks for saying good job by the way. I must stay vigilant regarding my staying on track. I can at times miss runs...and did very well addressing this last training episode. But I must continually stay aware and monitor myself. Which is why I am writing a week end summary. Last training period it was every three weeks...but I want to continually assess whether I am on track with the miles, and staying true to the program (Advanced Marathoning, 55 week peak program schedule, has various types runs to do on particular days).
From allie on Sat, Oct 30, 2010 at 20:17:41 from 174.23.195.124
yes, running the tangents is important in a race, as the course is measured using the shortest route possible and therefore not running them well will cause you to add distance to the overall race (although usually it is not enough to matter too much). i do not run tangents well. it is something i am working on though!

Hey Allie.
How is it going? Ah the note. I write a lot of notes. Mostly to myself as reminders. And information related to training. I am rather limited on pics. I have a Facebook page and for the pic - well you probably could guess what the pic looks like. Steve Prefontaine of course! But I think you are right about the pic. At these races I do, the pics never come out well. No, no. The photographer does a wonderful job I am sure - I'm just not photogenic. But the Chicago Marathon...those were the best pics ever (I posed). I would actually purchase 6 of them or so. But I have not even purchased one yet because they are so expensive. $20 a piece and S/H. $10 Shipping and Handling for two pics. But I may yet purchase two. Difficult decision.
But I will work on getting some pics posted. Of me, not the other Pre.

Thanks Allie and auntieem.
I am training for the Manchester Thanksgiving Day race. It is 4.76 miles. And then the next race will be the Colchester Half Marathon (maybe some smaller races between).
The January through May training period will have to see total commitment, because I have a May 1st Marathon in Rhode Island and I want to do well at that race.
But to do serious training for 27 consecutive weeks versus 18 weeks might be a challenge...so I am not really doing an in depth training program at this time. Plus...drat...winter is coming - and from I read on Allie's page, it is very cold on her runs already. I do not like cold weather!!! So maybe a treadmill for Christmas??? Who knows?

8:36, 8:46, 8:29, 8:36, 8:30, 8:29, 8:29, 8:23.
Again was going for 9:00 miles and was going faster than 9:00 per mile. So decided to do 8:37s. And then just said go for 8:35s. Of note, for the most part, when I say go for 8:35s, I hit around 8:30. So I am accurately running that pace without checking the watch. I know what 8:35 feels like. Need to get better at knowing what the other paces feel like.
My Half Marathon time, per McMillan calculator, predicts that I should be running 8:37 pace miles throughout a Marathon. Well I know that I can do that pace for some of the distance; but for all the distance? I have yet to do that pace during a marathon (best is 9:18 pace per mile). But in the past, I was going out hard at first, perhaps as I was attempting to achieve 8:20 pace or so per mile. Maybe I should try to do 15-20 milers once in a while at 8:37 pace. I will have to look at the Marathon splits for Chicago and other marathons to see where pace becomes slower. Consistent splits throughout may be the key for me...how then to maintain the consistency during the second half of the marathon is the question of the day!

yep. consistent splits. of course, i've tried that multiple times and failed. i apologize for using the 'f' word on your blog. the marathon is just very difficult to figure out. someday we'll get it though, and then we can use this blog to talk nonsense rather than talk about running.
From PRE on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 19:08:48 from 99.50.214.225
I know I have tried consistent splits and failed. But maybe there is a way??? Maybe if I can do 15 and then 20 consistent splits. Perhaps then 26 consistent splits.
I don't know. But maybe I can. I checked my splits for Chicago. If I do 18 miles with consistent splits...then that is an improvement. Even 15 miles of consistent splits is an improvement.
And then go from there. I am thinking that if I get faster, and I make 8:37 (my current marathon pace)an easier pace, then running 8:37s up front will not be that hard...will become harder to maintain at the tail end...but not impossible.
At least I am thinking it is possible. Not sure. But I will test the theory.
And pacers seem to bring people home in the correct times with some running consistent splits throughout and some going faster up front and slower on tail end.
I just have to make 8:37 miles easier to run than what they are now...and I realize this is easier said than done.
So keep checking back. Consistent 8:37s or better on tail end is what I am looking for!!!
Ran a 5K today at 8:07 pace per mile I think. Details to follow.
"According to your data, you ran faster than Usain Bolt in his 200 meter world record. This is highly unlikely. Double check your race time and race distance. LOL! I saw that you've run a couple of races. You'll get me before you know it. Now off to read your next one.

Good job on the 7s. They feel great, don't they?
From PRE on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 15:58:23 from 204.60.75.185
Thanks flatlander!
They do feel GREAT.
I have been waiting for these for so long.
I am hoping I can keep doing those 7s.
From PRE on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 16:03:45 from 204.60.75.185
Allie and Burt,
Thanks for your remarks. I am hoping to keep up that progress Allie.
11/23/10, 1234, Middletown: Broad-Church-Pleasant-Main-Washington-Broad...round and round. End at Dunkin for Medium Vanilla Bean Coolata.
Splits: 8:12, 8:20, 8:26, 7:54 (.10) for an 8:19 pace per mile.
Garmin reports Average pace as 8:18 and Average moving pace as 8:13. Well I know I slowed down at points at intersections...but no stops. Who knows?
Anyway, did not get those miles in the 7s range today. But I am confident that I will. Must continue to monitor runs.
Last year I ran 1040 miles. So far this year I ran 1032 miles. Allie, are you reading this? I think you know what it is like to run 1032 miles. Just think about the past ten weeks. I think that is about right.
But I should be running more miles. 40 miles a week would be 2080 miles per year. So I may just consider as a New Years resolution doubling the 2010 mileage for 2011!!!!!
Of note, January 1 through May 15th saw 305 miles run during that 4.5 month period. I ran 727 miles during the past 6 months. I must have been really lazy during January through May 15th. I have been writing journal entries since I started running...but in a book. I did not know that I could have done that on this site. But the details are in those entries. But 40 miles weekly is more than manageable...ohh but those winter months?

nice run. 40 mpw is a great goal. just increase the mileage gradually to ensure you stay injury free.
i like the idea of ending a run with a vanilla bean coolata. unfortunately we don't have dunkin donuts here it utah...

Issue: Last year I ran this race.I ran the first mile in 7:43.Mile two is all uphill with 200 Feet elevation.Last year it was evident I ran the first mile too quickly and as a result walked up some of that hill.
Strategy for this race: Run mile one at a relaxed pace.Conserve energy for mile 2.Do not walk up the mile 2 hill at any point. If must, run slower…do not walk.
Fast forward to today: Manchester Road Race.
Mile 1 done in 8:05 compared to 7:43 last year.
Mile 2 done in 8:43 compared to 9:42 last year. The strategy is working.I did not walk at any point. My focus was to run this hilly mile.To run slower if necessary and to focus on foot turnover was the goal for this mile!
Mile 3 done in 7:39 compared to 8:01 last year.A 7:39 mile.Not bad.
Mile 4 done in 7:29 compared to 7:52 last year.I do not notice the 7:29 split. But I do note that after mile 4, my average pace in the 7s range.Well I am going to close this race out keeping the average race pace in that range.I find myself a bit amazed that I got myself to this kind of pace given my earlier pace with the hill was in the high eights. But I am not depleted of energy.
Mile 4 to 4.75.Done at a 7:15 pace per mile compared to 7:28 last year. After the fact, I find myself wishing this race were a five miler because I am confident I would have PRd for the mile as well (current PR for mile is 7:24).
Manchester Road Race
Time: 37:20 versus 39:06 time last year.
Manchester Road Race PR by 1:46.
Pace: 7:52 versus 8:14 minute per mile pace last year
Manchester Road Race PR by 22 seconds per mile compared to last year.
This race effort was extraordinary!

Robin, Congratulations on your PRing for this course by 44 seconds! I looked for you at the race but could not find you. I thought you perhaps did not run the race but I saw your name in the results. A very impressive PR!
My Garmin reports I PR by 1:46. But the official report states I PR by 1:43! Hey, I can live with that!
What does this mean for next year???
Who knows? But I blogged earlier that I was going for a 38 minute race...and I went for a faster time after mile 4 when I noticed that I was running with average pace in the 7s territory.

You gotta love sub 8 miles. Nice job.

Good job, it is great when you have a direct comparison like that, it is hard evidence of how much you have improved.
From PRE on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 20:34:51 from 99.50.214.225
Allie, Thanks. I have to say I figured I would hit 38 minutes and seconds. Did not expect 37:20 for final time.
Burt, Thank you. Those sub 8s are amazing to me. And thank you also for continuing to educate me on blogging. You are doing that without even realizing it (the mileage board...and most recently while looking at your site I noticed you embedded a map of your race route. And so I did the same for this race. Even the way I respond to people...like I am doing now)
flatlander, hi and thank you. You may know that I have been tracking many statistics since I began running. I check old records periodically and was noticing earlier entries today in fact. And the improvement is dramatic from then to now. This is part of what drives me. I am in direct competition with myself. And there are some people that I want to run as well as...and I am closing the gap!!

Hi Allie,
Hope you are doing well.
Was wondering if the blog site would accept pasted information from Excel. The site does allow the information. But I notice that when I attempt to paste more than 100 lines or so, it does not paste all the information. Even decreased font size...but still some lost. So there are limits to how much data can be pasted or entered at one time I suspect.

1335, Middletown 5K route. Hilly.
3.11 HMP, lactate threshold miles at 8:20 pace per mile.
8:20, 8:40, 8:06 and 7:35 pace for 0.11
Good pace for the elevation and this is why being considered HMP, threshold miles. HMP is 8:09 pace.
Ran 0.39 on treadmill at 7.5 miles hour pace or 8:00 pace per mile. Got bored with this as like changing up the pace while run and does not feel natural.
317B146
Then ran for 3.20 miles at 8:38 pace per mile. Did mile circuirts around blocks above (link). You can see that there is 100 feet elevation up William Street which is 0.38 miles long. Ran that three times. A serious amount of elevation for the distance. Good hill workout.
Splits: 8:35, 8:42, 8:48 and 7:40 pace for 0.20.
3.59 miles total.
Week total is 6.70.

Middletown 5K Route. The 5K route sees me going up William Street again. I described the elevation in earlier report and thus again considering these HMP miles.
This was 3.06 miles done in 25:52 at 8:27 pace per mile. Weather cool to cold.
Splits: 8:30, 8:52, 8:02 and 7:23 for 0.06 miles.
I learned something recently. I can paste the Garmin run data link directly to this entry. The link is above. Interesting though is that I can see data for earlier runs by hitting "Previous" button. Great feature!
Another garmin feature that I just learned about: When I press "Player," the player plays out the runner running the route while a vertical bar goes along the elevation profile. Also I can put the cursor over the elevation chart and see the elevation, mile point in run and speed I was traveling during particular points selected. This is a handy feature. I just broke down the Colchester Half Marathon course and have noted the specific route points with high elevation over short distance (ten segments of the run totaling about 2.7 miles with 850 feet elevation. The course has total 1027 feet elevation. The question becomes how to best use this information to prepare for the 2/26/11 race.
Week total: 9.76

31st Pearl Harbor Masters 5.2 Mile Race

Weather cool to cold. 5.2 miles at 7:59 pace per mile.
I set Garmin for 10 miler and stopped it at race conclusion at time of 41:33 for 8:10 pace as Garmin reported 5.08 miles.
The Official race result for the 5.2 mile race is 41:33...my exact time reported by Garmin. The official race result states I completed the race at 7:59 pace per mile.
I ran this race last year...is it 5:08 miles or 5.2 miles? Well the Garmin reported last year the race as being 5.17 miles. Well I must really have improved with running those tangents! Actually I am unclear on as to the discrepancy. To top it off, I stopped the watch but did not turn it off. Then I restarted it and it calculated some serious quick mile paces for the last 5 miles (of ten miles). And why wouldn't it? I was driving after all.
The dilemma: what do I go with...well I will stick with the official report...I will consider the race distance to be 5.2 miles. I believe it is a measured course. And the race is run by SNERRO (I would imagine they are on top of the distance).
So a good race. By the way, my pace last year was 8:04 per mile. So this is another PR...not much...5 seconds per mile, but it is something.
Splits: 7:33, 8:23, 8:10, 8:10, 8:43, and 7:05 pace for last 0.20. I had to calculate that out given the issues mentioned above. And it is about right because I ran the last 0.30 miles at a hard pace. I had analyzed the elevation profile from last year prior to running the race this year. 1.02 to 1.5 miles sees 120 feet elevation. And mile 4.6 to 4.88 sees 90 feet elevation. Which means I must run 4.88 to 5.2 at hard pace to make up for lost time. It does make a difference knowing the elevation of the race route...it allows me to have a strategy for the race and does not leave me wondering when the next hill is and for how long I will be running that hill. Other hills...but for only tenth of mile or so and only 40 feet...so not overly concerned with the smaller hills.
I placed 32/86 (0.37)
Race cost $15.00. Ran the race. Timed event. Received tee-shirt. And so much food following it was just amazing. Oh...and a keg. Did I mention that it was not a packed event...check out the results link. By the way, I came in 32d (8th for my division). But these runners know how to run (I am getting there). All and all, as I ran the race at 7:59 pace per mile..who can complain? I am still out of the 8s and into the 7s!!
Ran to East Rock and began the ascent up East Rock. I should run East Rock to assess elevation.
Have 5K planned for Sunday.

From PRE on Wed, Dec 08, 2010 at 19:35:08 from 99.50.214.225
allie, Hello. Did a little hill work today. Not much though. But I am looking forward to running East Rock - mountain with monument on top.
Hoping to PR at that 5K. My current 5K PR is at 7:53 pace and was set on the course I will be running Sunday.
Current strategy: Mile 1 at 7:55 pace, surge last tenth of mile one for 7:45 pace. Mile 2: 7:55 pace, surge last tenth mile for 7:45 pace. Mile 3 at 7:55 pace...all out effort last 3/10s mile. Hoping for 7:43 pace per mile...ten seconds per mile off PR!
Have no idea if this plan is logical. But makes sense to me.
From allie on Wed, Dec 08, 2010 at 19:39:37 from 174.23.238.75
sounds like a great strategy. i have never actually tried the "surging" technique but i know it has worked well for others. maybe i will have to try it. good luck!
At 1016 for 3.1 miles in 25:24 at 8:10 pace per mile. Raining and soaked following. (By the way the garmin data is two minutes off...finished the race and then I hit the stop button (but did not need to do that as the watch stopped itself after the race...what I actually did was restart the watch and lap 5 was a two minute lap. Time on in garmin is 27:24 with the two minute 5th lap.)
Splits: Mile 1 is 7:25 (a second off from matching my PR for the mile), and now the bad news Mile 2 is 8:52 (walked for first tenth of mile 2) and Mile 3 is 8:14 ending with 7:59 pace for last 0.11.
What happened? Why such a mediocre performance? Well I had about three strategies prepared. But when I began the watch, I opted for strategy 4 - was not a very good strategy. It was to go out fast. When I noticed I was at 6:58 pace or so at 0.40, I thought that was pretty good. I did wind up hitting the 7:25 pace for first mile. But I cannot sustain this pace for 3.11. By end 2d mile, I am at 8:08 pace per mile. Well I could have simply run easy 8 minute miles for the first two miles and chopped off 16 seconds from this time...again...selected incorrect strategy! Ultimately end the race with an 8:10 pace per mile.
Hi Allie, had mentioned to you earlier considering doing 7:55s for first 0.9 and then "surge" for last 0.10 to bring pace to 7:45 for the mile and repeat x3...well I did not go there this race. Still think that is a good strategy for the short 5K distance. But I am unsure how to run the next 5K. Going out fast is surely not the answer. I may yet try the above strategy. Also am considering simply attempting to keep the pace within the 7:15-7:45 range (and if run it in 7:45, the high end of the range...well still a PR!).
Ah, the lessons we learn...(I came in 408/1332). Official Results report 25:29 for 8:12 pace per mile.

PRE - nice race. i am sorry that you felt it was "mediocre" -- i know the feeling :)
however, i think it's great that you are testing out different racing strategies. every race is an opportunity to learn something new (i learned that from oprah).
great job. keep it up!
From allie on Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 21:34:12 from 174.23.238.75
also - i think the surging strategy is good, just make sure you start out at a more manageable pace so that there is room to surge when needed. it is really easy to go out too fast in a 5k.
i still haven't figured out the best way to run a 5k, but i try to learn something from each race. overtime you can refine your strategy and feel more confident in your pacing (that was paraphrased from an oprah quote).

Allie,
Thanks for your remarks. Every race is an opportunity to learn something new - you are correct. And many training runs as well. I actually have been considering writing journal entries from the past two years to this blog (322 entries minus what I have written thus far). There were many questions, theories, tests, changes in strategies over the past two years...a continual, constant learning experience. And how slowly I ran when I first started!! We are talking miles above ten minute pace. One of my early goals was to run ten miles at 9:30 pace. I run much better now. But it is always about figuring out what works best, how can I get faster, what do I need to do? what do I need to change? But really, how boring would it be if that were absent?
Burt,
Hello. I really love the way you and Allie connect! Remember...Al Gore and Ted Koppel have nothing on you.

Home: Boot and Oval Mile repeats at 1533. This is the first run for me after sixteen days off! NOW MARATHON TRAINING BEGINS. 6.22 done in 56:14 at 9:02 pace with 148 HR average which is 85% maximum HR range for MP miles.
Splits: 9:37/140, 9:21/145, 9:05/149, 8:57/152, 8:55/153, 8:51/154, 1:51/155 (0.22). In essence, a progressive run although I was not aiming for that. I just got better at running the snow covered (at parts) course.
There was a blizzard yesterday in New England. Power out from 1am Monday to 1am Tuesday. It was cold then...but I ran this run in shorts. I simply am not ready to start donning sweats. Snow on the ground during this run. This is okay because I opted to take it easy due to that and given had I had not run in 16 days. As it turned out, the mileage was MP miles. Left knee pain.
And now two weeks of base training and then 16 weeks of additional training for the upcoming 5/1/10 Marathon.
One goal: Run 40-55 miles weekly for next 18 weeks (except week 17 which is 32 miles).

+1 for winter running in shorts! i hate running in pants -- i usually wear shorts year-round unless it is ridiculously nasty out.
good luck with your marathon training. What race are you planning on running may 1st?

Hi Allie,
I liked your graphs by the way (mileage for last year and this year). Have to say you are similar to me in some respects. I do the graphs, the analyzing, and early on when I began running, I went with the metronome...but the damn MP3 player I was using cut out 1/4 mile into the run. So after a few days gave up on that!
I figured I would go for the Cox Sports Marathon in Providence Rhode Island again. I ran that last year. Not the best time then mind you...and so I aim to conquer that course in 2011. I plan to PR for the event...not just the course, but the Marathon!!!!!
Don't read too much into those exclamation points. Just me pointing out to myself that I want to PR for the marathon and reminding myself that I must stay committed to putting in the miles.
Home: Boot and Oval route Mile repeats at 1311. Wanted to cut the run short...opted to do the scheduled 6.22. 6.22 done in 54:43 at 8:48 pace per mile with AHR of 155 for HMP Lactate Threshold Range miles. HR 89% of MHR.
Splits: 830/143, 833/154, 849/156, 853/157, 858/160, 910/161, 833/163 (0.22). So the pace per mile increases with each split...but also the Heart Rate. Not sure what to make of that yet.
Path clear today with much less snow. Little snow at the turns but clear for the most part. Left knee seems bit better. Will continue to monitor.
A good run. Done at HMP range. I thought given the splits that I was going at MP range. I do not monitor the HR while running. I monitor the splits. But mostly I listen to my breathing while running and can figure out the effort output.
5 miles done in 42:54 for 8:35 pace. No HR monitor. But am considering these Lactate Threshold miles as pace faster than yesterday and yesterday HR in Lactate threshold range.
Did 6 x 400s with equal rest. Warm up and Cool down. The splits for the 400s should have been in the 1:42-1:47 range. Ahhh...did them at average of 2:03. Will have to work on that. Speed sessions reserved for Tuesday. I have to run those quarters fifteen seconds faster...I better improve on that pace soon!!
I am running at my correct HR intensity for the various types of runs I am planning...yet my pace is off. Again, not sure what to make of that yet.
Splits: 1.24 at 8:33 pace. Then the 400s at (per mile pace) 725, 909, 821, 854, 812, 850, 822, 849, 831, 904, 813, 859. Then 0.76 at 843.
So Chicago Marathon pictures came in. I ordered two. They were expensive and I still am not sure if it was worth it. But at any rate, posted them to this site and Facebook. Took a while to figure out how to get the picture compressed to the required 400K for this site. And the scanner was not working so I had to hook that up to the netbook and reinstall software. But finally Pre moves aside and PRE becomes visible.

Nice pic. Love all the detail in your reports, I think paying attention to the details helps us improve more quickly.
Lent eyeglasses and boot route done at 1251. 5 Recovery miles done in
48:26 at 9:40 pace with AHR being 139
at 80% MHR.
This was a Recovery run. Should be done at <76% MHR. Recovery
pace should be done at 10:00-10:30
pace.
I ran this at a slow and comfortable pace. A bit faster pace than
Recovery. My goal is to run my miles at the correct HR intensities.
Run easy when scheduled. This will allow my hard runs to not be
compromised.

I
have compared Glover’s data, charts and tables to McMillan’s
calculations. There is not a significant difference in the optimal
training paces for the various distances. Nor is there a significant
difference in the equivalent performances. Thus I will go with
McMillan. To go with Glover requires some work and calculating (checking
various charts/tables). McMillan Calculator is one entry…and the calculator
does all the work.
The
McMillan calculator will quickly arrive at optimal training paces and
equivalent performances for any race distance and time entered. Thus I
can quickly enter the new PR into the calculator and arrive at the revised
equivalent performances and optimal training paces for the various
distances. I did need to check and double check to make sure this was
reasonable…it is. I can use the McMillan calculator with confidence.
